What do we gain from attempting to decipher a language at the edge of our understanding? And in struggling to find the right word to say? Continuous Wave (2019), a project by LA-based artist Emily Mast, featuring Kayla Bourne, Antoni Eubanks, Loris Jones-Randolph and Christine Morse, with costumes by Nancy Stella Soto.
Brought to Santa Monica Proper by the first established champagne house, Ruinart, for one special evening in February, floating these questions like champagne bubbles, and offering moments of reflection and connection. VIP guests were invited to submit five-word responses to the poetic prompt: ‘what message would you leave the world if you were out at sea?’ A translator then converted these messages into Morse code and singers then transformed them into song.
This special celebration, during the week of Frieze LA, married a Ruinart champagne tasting, otherworldly design and delectable bites of Santa Monica Proper, and the ethereal Continuous Wave performance art.
